Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the Fiery Furnace

c. 580 BC

Exile Old Testament

What Happened

Three young Jewish exiles refused to bow to Nebuchadnezzar's golden image. They were thrown into a furnace heated seven times hotter than normal, but God protected them. A fourth figure appeared in the flames, and they emerged without even the smell of smoke.

Biblical Significance

Their bold declaration, "Even if He does not deliver us, we will not serve your gods," remains one of the greatest statements of faith in Scripture. The fourth figure in the fire is widely seen as a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ.
