Binding of Isaac

c. 2050 BC

Patriarchs Old Testament

What Happened

God tested Abraham by commanding him to sacrifice Isaac on Mount Moriah. Abraham obeyed in faith, but God provided a ram as a substitute at the last moment. Abraham named the place "The LORD Will Provide."

Biblical Significance

The Akedah (binding of Isaac) is one of the most profound foreshadowings of Christ in the Old Testament. God providing a substitute ram points to Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
