The four hundred years between Malachi and the birth of Christ saw Persia's fall to Greece, Alexander the Great's conquests, the Maccabean revolt, and Rome's rise to power. God was silent through prophets but actively preparing the world for the Messiah.
Though called the "silent years," this period fulfilled Daniel's prophecies about successive empires. Greek language, Roman roads, and Jewish diaspora synagogues all providentially prepared the world for the rapid spread of the Gospel.
