Malachi's Prophecy

c. 430 BC

Return from Exile Old Testament

What Happened

Malachi, the last Old Testament prophet, rebuked Israel for corrupt worship, unfaithfulness, and spiritual apathy. He prophesied the coming of a messenger to prepare the way for the Lord and warned of the coming day of judgment.

Biblical Significance

Malachi closes the Old Testament with both warning and hope. His prophecy of a coming messenger was fulfilled in John the Baptist. After Malachi, four hundred years of prophetic silence followed before the New Testament era.
