After forty years of leading Israel, Moses was permitted to view the Promised Land from Mount Nebo but not enter it. He died at 120 years old, and God Himself buried him. Joshua was commissioned as his successor.
Moses' death marked the end of an era. His inability to enter the Promised Land illustrates the limitations of the Law. Joshua, whose name shares the same root as "Jesus," would lead the people into rest.
