Evening — Peace That Passes Understanding

By Charles Spurgeon

"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

The peace that Jesus gives is utterly unlike anything the world can offer. The world's peace depends on circumstances — when all is well, we feel at ease; when trouble comes, our peace vanishes. But the peace of Christ is independent of outward conditions. It is a deep, settled calm that flows from the knowledge that our lives are in the hands of a sovereign and loving God.

Our Lord spoke these words on the very night He would be betrayed, arrested, and condemned to death. Yet He was not troubled; He was giving peace to others! This is the nature of divine peace — it does not crumble under pressure. It is rooted in eternity, not in the shifting sands of this passing world.

As you close this day, hear the Savior's tender command: "Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." This is not a suggestion but a loving imperative from One who has conquered every foe. Whatever troubled you today, lay it at His feet. Whatever you fear about tomorrow, entrust it to His keeping. His peace is yours — receive it and rest.
