Evening — The Shepherd Who Seeks the Lost

By Charles Spurgeon

"What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?"

What kind of shepherd leaves ninety-nine safe sheep to search for one that has wandered? Only a shepherd whose love is so great that the loss of even one is unbearable. This is the heart of our God — not content to save the many while the one perishes, but actively, relentlessly pursuing the lost until He finds them.

And notice — He goes after the lost sheep until He finds it. Not until He grows weary, not until a more convenient season, but until He finds it. The persistence of divine love is one of the most astonishing truths in all of Scripture. God does not give up on His own. If you have wandered, He is searching for you right now.

Perhaps tonight you feel like that lost sheep — away from the fold, tangled in thorns, unable to find your way back. Look up, beloved. The Shepherd is already on His way. He has not forgotten you. He has not abandoned you. He is coming after you with a love that will not rest until you are safely home. Let Him find you tonight. Let Him carry you back on His shoulders, rejoicing.
