Evening — A Refuge in Times of Trouble

By Charles Spurgeon

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."

Three glorious truths meet us in this single verse. First, God is our refuge — our hiding place, our shelter, our fortress when the enemy attacks. Second, He is our strength — not merely a source of strength but strength itself, made available to every trembling child who calls upon His name. Third, He is a very present help — not a distant deity, not an absent ally, but a very present, right-here, right-now help in trouble.

The Psalmist does not say "a help after trouble" or "a help to avoid trouble" but "a help in trouble." God meets us in the midst of our difficulty, not merely on the other side of it. He does not wait for the storm to pass before He comes; He walks into the storm to find you.

Whatever trouble this day has brought you, know that God is your refuge tonight. Run to Him. Hide in Him. Draw strength from Him. He is not merely available — He is present, attentive, and active on your behalf. The mountains may shake and the waters may roar, but your God is unmovable, and in Him you are safe.
