Evening — Resting in the Arms of the Shepherd

By Charles Spurgeon

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters."

As the day closes and the shadows lengthen, what sweeter words could meet the weary soul than these: "The Lord is my shepherd." Not a hireling, not a stranger, but the Lord Himself — the Almighty Creator of heaven and earth — condescends to be your shepherd. Can you fathom such tenderness from one so great?

The sheep does not provide for itself; the shepherd does all. He finds the pasture, he locates the water, he guards against the wolf. And notice — He makes us to lie down. The restless sheep must be made to rest, for left to ourselves we would wander and worry until exhaustion overtakes us. But our Good Shepherd knows when we need rest even before we do.

Tonight, as you lay your head upon your pillow, remember that the same Shepherd who led you through this day will watch over you through the night. You shall not want. He has provided, He is providing, and He will continue to provide. Rest now in His care, for underneath are the everlasting arms.
