c. 850 BC

What Happened

Elijah was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind with a chariot and horses of fire, witnessed by his successor Elisha. Elisha received a double portion of Elijah's spirit and picked up the fallen mantle, continuing the prophetic ministry.

Biblical Significance

Elijah's departure without death placed him alongside Enoch as one who was taken by God. His promised return was fulfilled in the ministry of John the Baptist, who came in the spirit and power of Elijah.
