God called Jonah to preach repentance to Nineveh, but Jonah fled by ship. God sent a storm, and Jonah was thrown overboard and swallowed by a great fish for three days. After being delivered, Jonah preached and Nineveh repented.
Jesus explicitly identified Jonah's three days in the fish as a sign pointing to His own death, burial, and resurrection. The story also reveals God's compassion extends beyond Israel to all nations.
