After the Magi visited the infant Jesus, an angel warned Joseph in a dream to flee to Egypt because King Herod planned to kill the child. The holy family remained in Egypt until Herod's death, fulfilling the prophecy "Out of Egypt I called my son."
The flight to Egypt connects Jesus' story with Israel's history. Just as Israel went to Egypt and was called out, so the true Israel, Christ, recapitulated Israel's journey, fulfilling the nation's calling perfectly.
