Stephen, one of the first seven deacons and a man full of the Holy Spirit, was arrested for preaching about Jesus. He delivered a powerful sermon tracing God's work through Israel's history, then was stoned to death as he saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
Stephen was the first Christian martyr. His death, echoing Christ's forgiveness from the cross, scattered believers beyond Jerusalem, spreading the Gospel. Saul of Tarsus witnessed the stoning, and the seeds of his conversion were planted.
