Evening — The Nearness of the Lord

By Charles Spurgeon

"The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."

Here is a promise that turns the world's values upside down. The world runs from brokenness, but God runs toward it. The world admires the strong and self-sufficient, but God draws near to the humble and contrite. If your heart is breaking tonight, you are not disqualified from God's presence — you are specially qualified for it.

The Lord is nigh — not distant, not indifferent, not merely aware, but near. He draws close to the brokenhearted with a tenderness that no human comforter can match. He does not lecture the wounded; He binds up their wounds. He does not scold the weeping; He bottles their tears. He does not abandon the crushed; He saves them.

If this evening finds you with a broken heart or a contrite spirit, take courage. You are in the very position where God does His most intimate work. He is closer to you right now than you realize. Whisper His name, and you will find that He has been whispering yours all along. The Lord is near. Be comforted.
