What Happened

During a severe famine, Jacob and his entire family moved to Egypt at Joseph's invitation. Pharaoh gave them the land of Goshen. The family of seventy grew into a great nation over the next four centuries.

Biblical Significance

This migration set the stage for Israel's enslavement and eventual Exodus, the defining event of Old Testament salvation history. God used Egypt to grow Israel from a family into a nation.
