Raising of Lazarus

c. AD 30

Life of Christ New Testament

What Happened

Jesus raised His friend Lazarus from the dead after Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days. Jesus wept at the tomb, then called out "Lazarus, come forth!" This miracle led many to believe but also accelerated the plot to kill Jesus.

Biblical Significance

The raising of Lazarus is the climactic sign in John's Gospel, demonstrating Jesus' power over death itself. Jesus' declaration "I am the resurrection and the life" is one of the great "I AM" statements.
